A response to the loss of my brother-in-law and friend, Dean, the 7 Series explores the condition and genetics of cystic fibrosis.

Every chromosome has a constriction point called the centromere, which divides the chromosome into two sections, short arms and long arms, creating a loose ‘X’ shape that I have stylised in these sculptures.

G banding (or Giemsa banding) is a staining procedure that reveals characteristic features for each chromosome. It is useful for identifying genetic diseases and showing the position on each chromosome that the responsible gene lies.

This piece shows the G banding of chromosome 7, the position of the CF gene (CFTR) being shown by the copper coloured bands on the long arms, 2/3 of the way down the sculpture.
